About Fred Cohen

Dr. Cohen is best known as the person who defined the term "computer virus" and the inventor of most of the widely used computer virus defense techniques, the principal investigator whose team defined the information assurance problem as it relates to critical infrastructure protection, as a seminal researcher in the use of deception for information protection, as a leader in advancing the science of digital forensic evidence examination, and as a top flight information protection consultant and industry analyst.

In his work on deception, Dr. Cohen started to use magic tricks to teach university students how to understand deception, developed theoretical frameworks for deception, and then applied them to the development of new magic tricks and related deceptions. He now regularly uses magic to teach concepts in deception to graduate students, does tricks as part of his presentations to engage the audience, and applies methods from magic to information protection.
