At all of our learning experiences, the Lance Burton Teen Seminar Faculty is committed to creating a safe environment in which all students feel free and able to learn. Our commitment holds true for every student and participant, but we know there are special considerations regarding students who are minors.
This document is both a general statement of our specific policy and practices for when a minor student is attending one of our Seminar programs, such as the Lance Burton Teen Seminar, and contains an agreement that must be signed by each minor student and their parent or guardian, and the specific adult attending the I.B.M. Convention that will be the responsible adult guardian for the minor participant.
Please note: unless we have this signed agreement in advance, no minor will be permitted to attend the Lance Burton Teen Seminar.
Our Policy
A minor is defined as someone who is not yet 18 years old at the time of the class they wish to attend—in this case, the Lance Burton Teen Seminar.
The Lance Burton Teen Seminar follows the widely accepted practice of “No One-On-One Contact” between minor students and adult faculty, staff, and/or other students. This means that at no time during the scheduled times of Seminar activities will a minor student be alone with an adult. In situations that require personal conferences or instruction, such sessions will be held with at least one other adult in the room.
While the Lance Burton Teen Seminar cannot be held responsible for anything that happens outside the scheduled times and instructional rooms of the Seminar, we nonetheless want to prevent any situation in which a minor student is alone with an adult or non-minor student. Therefore, a parent or guardian is responsible for dropping off minor students at the start of the Seminar, picking them up for lunch and/or dinner breaks, and at the end of the day’s scheduled activities.
Faculty and staff members associated with the Lance Burton Teen Seminar will receive training pursuant to the “I.B.M. Youth Protection Policy” (as adopted on February 16, 2026) and must acknowledge and follow this agreement before teaching or assisting with any educational programs.
Agreement
We the undersigned understand the terms for Minor Protection as stated above and agree to follow these terms during the Lance Burton Teen Seminar.
Except in the event of a breach of the above-stated policy by the Lance Burton Teen Seminar (or one of its faculty or staff), the minor student and his/her parent or guardian agree that they shall be fully responsible for the well-being of the minor in their care and waive the right to bring any and all claims or damages of any kind against the Lance Burton Teen Seminar and/or any of its faculty or staff that may be brought in any forum in connection with the terms and conditions of this agreement.
