Our Mission

The Mission of the I.B.M. is to foster a global community of magic enthusiasts and professionals, celebrating the art of magic as a dynamic form of entertainment. Through innovative publications, exceptional events, and visionary leadership, the I.B.M. aims to inspire creativity, elevate standards, and cultivate a welcoming environment to all.

These 50 words capture the concepts which have guided our organization for over 100 years and are as relevant today as they were in 1922.

In 1922, three young enthusiasts—M.J.G. McMullen, Gordon Avery, and Ernest Schieldge—started corresponding across borders about their passion for the art. They would later become known as Len Vintus, Gene Gordon, and Don Rogers—the founding trio of the International Brotherhood of Magicians.

With Vintus as President (Member No. 1), Gordon as Publicity Director (No. 2), and Rogers as editor of The Linking Ring (No. 3), the I.B.M. quickly grew beyond pen and paper. Soon, magicians across North America were forming local “Rings” to share secrets, elevate the craft, and build community.

It all began with a few letters and a shared love of magic.

More than a century later, the I.B.M. continues to connect magicians around the world. From that backyard convention in Ohio in 1926 to 300 Rings worldwide today, our mission remains the same: to celebrate, advance, and protect the art of magic.

Through shared knowledge, ethical performance, and lifelong recognition—including our prestigious “Order of Merlin”—the I.B.M. fosters a global family of magicians, hobbyists, and professionals. As we look to the future, we honor a legacy built by legends and carried forward by every member who dares to dream and dazzle.
