Stretch your money

I cannot believe it has been a year since the I.B.M./S.A.M. Combined Convention in Louisville, Ky. It was my first convention, and what a choice for my inaugural one. I appreciate all that Leland Pennington did to help make the trip possible. Leland and I had fun attending the lectures and shows, and we also enjoyed visiting the dealers, seeing old friends, and making new ones.

Below is a video we put together about "stretching your money." I hope you enjoy it.

When I was relatively new to the business of magic, I had a chance to spend some time with Ricky Jay.  It was my job to pick him up at the Oakland Airport along with Max Maven and Michael Weber. Michael was one of the featured performers for the 1994 PCAM Convention and the other two magicians were traveling with him. My partner Larry Wright and I had booked all of the convention talent and I pleaded with Larry to let me pick them up just so that I could spend the one-hour drive-time from Oakland to Concord with Ricky. (read more

Have You Heard...
March 23, 2009
by Maria Ibâñez

Greetings, the tax man cometh, or at least the tax deadline which is just a few short days away. This thought makes me wonder, when it's all said and done, what the numbers will show on that bottom line for many of us by comparison with last year; better still, what will it show a year from now. The Linking Ring has a new Advertising Manager, Michael Ammar will be lecturing in North Florida, a great deal of magic will be changing hands this weekend, my friend Ken Scott has been selected to host the Friday night competition at this year's KIDabra conference, broken wands, good and welfare, birthdays and anniversaries, all covered in this issue of Have you Heard. Any news you have to share, please send to me by clicking on my name here (Maria) or at the bottom of this page, where I also welcome your comments, feedback and suggestions. (read more) (Español).

What's Happening on the Houston Magic SceneWeekly Round-Up
by SCOTT WELLS
March 23, 2009

Howdy friends. Spring has sprung and love and magic is in the air. Lots of things happening in and around Houston this week and in the near future. I mentioned that we have quite a line-up of lecturers coming through soon and that’s a fact. I also mentioned that the Magic Island is under repair but that’s a rumor. I mentioned that “love is in the air” because one of our local magic aficionados will soon be tying the knot that can’t be undone. Looking around the state Austin, TX will host their annual auction in a few weeks and they have also announced their state-wide magic competition open to all comers. Back to Houston, the T.A.O.M. will host its mid-year meeting in Houston this weekend; we have our monthly I.B.M. Ring meeting tonight at our recently remodeled regular location; plus lots of magicians working around town including a séance. (Read More…)

A SHORT NOTE ON
ALI BONGO
by Dale Salwak (US)

Ali Bongo's reputation - as a gentleman, as a man with an encyclopedic knowledge of magic and theatre, and as an encourager of the youth - preceded our meeting in January 1973.  I had arrived in London for ten days.  Knowing this was my first trip, Ali promptly took me under his wing and showed me around - including the London Magic Society and the London Magic Circle.
