ALI BONGO

Ali Bongo's reputation - as a gentleman, as a man with an encyclopedic knowledge of magic and theatre, and as an encourager of the youth - preceded our meeting in January 1973.  I had arrived in London for ten days.  Knowing this was my first trip, Ali promptly took me under his wing and showed me around - including the London Magic Society and the London Magic Circle. Nick Lewin's Farewell to the Shriek of Araby. - There was a moment in magic's history recently, a worldwide sigh when the magic world came together to say goodbye to Ali Bongo - one of our most quietly accomplished elders. A great many people in a great many places felt the same sadness at the passing of one of most loved and respected men in our fraternity. Growing up in England in the 60s, you didn't need to be on the magic scene for too long before you discovered Ali Bongo.  (read more)

Update on Ali Bongo from Rob and Mandy Davis (UK) who have been visiting Ali in hospital he had his first real meal yesterday.  Keep sending those cards.  Ali has significantly improved over the last few weeks and been having speech therapy.  His IV which was put in his "good" hand he pulled out so it was put in his "bad" hand and he managed to pull it out with his legs so his determination and will power very much in evidence! Latest Update on Ali Bongo in Hospital in London - Rob and Mandy Davis report that Ali Bongo was airlifted to a prominent London hospital, visiting is limited, but Mandy (who is off to the Blackpool convention very soon) has emphasized that he really looks forward to receiving mail which his neighbor Stewart brings to him at the hospital and reads to him daily.  At this stage his condition seems to have stabilised after having the stroke. Known as Marconick, here are a few notes from Whaley's Who's Who In Magic: (The Hague, Holland: 30 Mar 1930) Practiced magic since 1945. He gave over 400 shows in the military 1950-56. He won many awards since 1952, including 1955 FISM 1st prize in manip & 1961 FISM 1st prize for general magic.  Hope to have more information later. (read more)
