Have You Heard...

(Miami, FL)

Greetings... the financial up and downs continue to plague us, but it makes for interesting days as people seem to be "glued" to the newscasts and Internet news the way many were glued to their radios in the past. This too shall pass, the question is when and how long can some hold out financially. The news came fast and furious this week and due to the nature of what it was, several e-mails went out with regards to losing of friends in magic, surgeries of others, etc. I thank you for your e-mails of gratitude for the news and thank you also for passing the news along so it could be shared. (read more...)

It's is time to start planning for the holiday season which starts with this month's Halloween, a make or break holiday for many. Time to finalize the new shows we've been working on, start (if you haven't already done so) with marketing and selling of your shows, and to look forward to what we hope will be a very busy entertainment season. We can then look forward to a New Year, 2009, and what that will bring.

Until next time,

Keep a dream in the making for you create your tomorrows by what you dream today.

GOOD AND WELFARE

Le Grand DavidLE GRAND DAVID, CESAREO PELAEZ and THE BULL FAMILY

The Bull family has indeed suffered the loss of their father and while this was not unexpected, it always hits one hard to lose any member of ones family. He passed away peacefully on the 23rd of the month after a few short months of illness. He lived a wonderful full live, raised six wonderful children who all grew up to be productive members of society and two of whom are members of our magical family, David and Webster. Daughter-in-law Katie is a very important part of Le Grand David, as have been Martha and Marion two of the grand-daughters, who still continue to perform with the company when they are in Beverly.

Martha and Webster spent a great deal of time during the past few months interviewing and recording his memoirs. These have been made into a book which was, privately published, bound and the first copy of which was into his hands before he passed away. Copies of the book are now available for members of their family. This next issue of the calendar and newspaper which they publish twice a month will feature a full story on his life --- we look forward to receiving our copies of these.

Cesareo, my dear and beloved friend, is doing well. He did, as we all know, have a stroke quite a while back and it took a great deal out of him BUT, thank God, he is, while still a little frail, very much a part of the magic world and still performs on Thursday at the Larcom and Sunday at the Cabot Theater. My family and I consider ourselves blessed to have such a wonderful family -- yes that is what they are to us -- FAMILY in Beverly, and we are very, very happy that we will have Cesareo as a part of that family for as long as the Lord permits us to which we pray will be a long, long time.

MICHAEL ELLIS It is sad to report the passing of Past International President of the I.B.M., Michael Ellis. Read more on his life and passing here at magician.org at the following link: http://www.magician.org/portal/it/node/533

JOE LEFLER -- Happy to report that Joe is back home after his triple bypass. We have spoken by phone and he sounds chipper and strong and ready to face the world. He reports that last week he even had an opportunity to take his staff to lunch after visiting the Doctor who was very pleased with the progress that Joe is making. Looks like my dear friend will be around this holiday season to thrill and delight young audiences who visit Santa Claus. By the way, have you seen Joe's new communication system that he wears (well out of sight) when he speaks to the children? If you haven't, you really should check it out! http://www.wearefun.com/ or if you prefer a link directly to the page for the item, here it is http://tinyurl.com/3hhf5w

AL ROSCOE -- Al continues to receive chemo and is very, very weak. He is doing his best to fight this liver cancer. He has a strong family support and Phyllis is holding up as well as she can under the circumstances. Please do keep him and the family in your prayers.

GREG BORDNER -- Greg continues to recuperate and hopefully he will be back as his old self as soon as possible. We continue to keep him in our thoughts and prayers as he deals with this heart transplant.

ALLIED ARTS YOUR PRAYERS ARE REQUESTED

At her request I am sending information regarding arrangements that have been made.

The viewing for Gary Anderson will be on Monday, Oct 6, between 6-8 PM held at the Forest Ridge Funeral Home at the corner of 183/121 & Precinct Line. The funeral will be on Tuesday, Oct 7 at 11 AM and held at their church....The Friendship Baptist Church 1248 W 1st Blvd, Hurst 76053.... the church phone is 817-284-9886.

Although Gary has had heart problems in the past, he seemed to be doing fine. He was in his early 50's so this has come as a shock to all who knew him. May God be with her and look over her, and please keep Sandra, Flutter the Clown, and her family, in your prayers as she deals with her loss.

WORD FROM TEXAS

Hello Maria, Herb Jacobs here in Texas. Moved from hurricanes in Florida six months ago and got IKE here in Katy Texas. We were spared the worst. We had power all thru. Lost some shingles on our roof, major damage to our daughters new house and major damage to our show barns. (Thoroughbred horse ranch). OTW we are all OK and thanks for all your prayers.
I just uploaded some pictures of my house to my website: www.hebertmagic.com/ike

We have moved into an apartment in Clear Lake and will probably be here for several months. If all goes well we can start the reconstruction soon. My brother-in-law does home remodeling in North Carolina and he will be moving down here for a few months to help with our house, plus I am sure he will pick up many more jobs. He does high quality, so he will be in great demand. Beth is flying him down on Monday to do a site survey. Beth is a Flight Attendant for Southwest Airlines, so we get to fly him down for free, which is good news.

Thanks for all your thoughts,
Rick Hebert

WORD FROM COLLEAGUES

From Windy & Sunny
Dear Maria,
You are doing a great service to the magic community with your, Have You Heard.
The economy is really down. The powers that be should own up to it and say that we are in a depression. For my part alone I used to do 5 to 7 birthday shows a week end, and 4 or 5 shows week nights.

Now I am lucky to have 3 shows a week. I see many neighbors losing their homes and moving back in with relatives. Let us pray that the next president will take care of the people in this country first.
Keep up the good work.
WINDY & SUNNY

We take this opportunity to let you know that we will be sending a flyer about the next magic event in which we will also celebrate the next anniversary of FLASOMA.

Magician Taylor MartinTAYLOR MARTIN -- INDY MAGIC MONTHLY
Once again it's time for Indy Magic Monthly, Indianapolis's Original Magic and Variety series. And, we have 2 shows this month: Oct. 2 with Pat Smith and Robert Sode and Oct. 28 with Robert Charles (Magic Chicago) and the Andrea Merlyn Magic Show: Glamour Redux. The latter is themed for Halloween fun and should be a great evening.

If you're out and about this weekend, Fishers' Renaissance Faire is happening at Conner Prairie in Noblesville. I'll be performing 3 shows a day on the High Street Stage. This is a really great event and we hope to have lots of magic fans in attendance. There are 2 other magicians besides myself and I think you'll find the music and food to m'lady's liking.

Of note, there will be no November show as it's Election Night. Don't fool yourself, get out and vote!!

For information and details go to the website at Indy Magic Monthly. See you at Theatre On The Square this Tuesday.

FROM STERLING DIETZ

I am happy to share with you this month's news from the Wonder Boy of Magic -- Sterling Dietz. Jay and I are VERY PROUD of Sterling and all his accomplishments and are VERY HAPPY to call him a friend. Keep up the good work Sterling and God Bless you and the family.
--------
As many of you know the summer months of June, July, and August were filled with many opportunities for me to perform and hone my skills in magic. After performing at the Northwest Washington Fair and Island County Fair, I was asked to perform for 600 Boys and Girls Club leaders from eight states in the southwest region. Jessica, my dad, and I, flew to Dallas to be the entertainment for their week long leadership conference event. We made lots of new friends, and put together a great show for them.

We also had time to visit with friends and magicians Bronson Chadwick & Jeb Sherrill in Dallas.

While we were there we were able to visit the Six Floor Book Repository Museum. It was a most fascinating tour of the events that took place on the sad day that President Kennedy was assassinated. Jessica and I looked behind the grassy knoll, and tried to imagine the chaotic scene that fateful day.

A few days later I performed for the Matrix Corporation at their annual event for the employees and their families.

The annual "Everett Day of Magic" was held this year with several professional magicians performing and lecturing. It was really nice to just go and enjoy spending time with my friends in magic, and not perform. I am so fortunate to have such great friends and mentors in the field of magic and entertainment.

Eric Buss, Michael Vincent, and Reed McClintock lectured during the day, and gave an incredible performance, along with Master Payne, that night.

Magician Sterling DeitzThe Whatcom Newcomers had their event titled "A Night of Magic" It was a full dinner show filled with fun and laughter. The Newcomers is an organization whose mission is to bridge the transition of new residents, by providing a forum for friendships, information, and activities. http://hatcomnewcomers.org/index.htm Cheryl Kelly was such a joy to work with, and the members were a hoot!

Saturday night we finished two shows for the Lynden High School Senior Class of 2009. The Senior class parent group along with Senior Class President Amanda Kayser, and other officers organized a great event. The Lynden Middle School auditorium was transformed into a magical place for the day. Families came and enjoyed being taken for a magical journey, if only for an hour and a half of music, movement, and magic. The show opened with a hip hop performance by the dance team from "Dancing for Joy" http://www.dfjbellingham.com/ Their routine culminated with a surprising magical production of me and the start of the show with my new illusion called "Portal" built and designed by magician and close friend, Brian Cook.

Brian was also the stage manager for the show, and did a tremendous job setting up the lights, effects, and the directing of the show.

Special thanks: to Rich Kayser on sound, Brittney on the light board, and Thomas and Jake, on spotlights. Backstage was handled by Jimmy, Jayme, and Clark. My Dad, Rich, directed the stage crew and set up and tore down all of the illusions as the show progressed. My Mom, Rochelle, and Jessica's Mom, Julia Gassman, took care of feeding the performers & crew all day, and Mom also acted as the show photographer & historian. Joan Kayser, Amanda Kayser, and their team of senior officers & parents took care of ticket sales, sponsorships, ushering, concessions & decorating. As you can tell by now it takes a great team to pull off a great show and a great event.

My dear friend, and mentor in magic Mr. John Walton performed, and amazed the audiences with close-up magic before, and after the show.

Another great thing happened with Sunshine Whitton and Absolute Technology, http://www.absolutetech.com/ who came up from Seattle, and filmed both shows. It is our hope to acquire some great footage to be used in our new magic promo video. Sunshine Whitton- Producer/Director, Jen Forbes-production coordinator, and Anthony Tomes-cameraman were shooting footage from many different angles. I can't wait to see what comes out of post production.

This past Saturday, September 27, Jessica and I had the honor of performing at the Broadway Center for the Arts Opening Night at Pantages Theatre in Tacoma. It was a great vaudeville show with several amazing performers. Jessica and I performed our illusion called "Human Origami," and I closed our portion of the show with my signature "Torn and Restored Newspaper." It was the 25th anniversary of the Broadway Center for the Performing Arts, and the 90th anniversary of the Pantages Theatre which has just been beautifully decorated.

I'm still writing notes on my amazing experience last July in Louisville at the IBM/SAM convention.

More on that later...
