What this Portal column needs is a good proof reader but Mel is too cheap to hire one. So here I sit flipping through all of the pages of ads touting a bunch of stuff my wife won't let me purchase... maybe a can pay cash! The Linking Ring cover story this month is by William V. Rauscher. He takes a look at Magician John Calvert: A Legend in Legerdemain. Going strong at ninety-seven, this is a look back at his historic career. This is followed by Associate Editor's, Scott Humston description seeing John Calvert's full evening show for the first time at Capitol Theatre in Bowling Green, Kentucky in June. (read more)

If you like digging into the past of our organization, check out Gene Gordon's Magic Legacy. Many thanks to David Ginn for helping to keep the rich history of the I.B.M. alive.

Our Linking Ring Editor's Historical Letters from the past spotlight's The Great Dante, Thurston, Kellar and Burling Hull. This is an intriguing story about the inner workings of magic in their time and the marketing of reputations to the lay audience. As usual it is a fascinating read with more to follow next month.

The final feature story this month involves a fellow out on the West Coast by the name of James Nelson-Lucas. And, has he got a story to tell you! He is a member of the National Storytelling Network, the South Coast Storytellers Guild, and the National Storytelling in Organizations, S.I.O. Have you every got stuck trying to develop a patter line that would make a specific effect soar with the eagles? Here is an article about story-telling and how to make it work. Learn more about James at www.jamesstorymagic.com. For more links to storytelling sites visit: www.jamesstorymagic.com/71-Links.htm.

In the monthly columns, Meet Davey Richardson, AKA ‘Dr. Magic' by Dakota Rose, The truth about Hummer's Whirling Card by Bev Bergeron, Nick Lewin investigates Women in Boxes, Julian Franklin (our new advertising manager) finds something new under the Sun, Elizabeth Warlock has a few notes from across the pond... ok more than a few, Mike Powers takes on Cold Calling by Andres Loh, Tom Craven is more than Colorfull and Peter Marucci has found Grandpa's False Teeth. Ed Soloman has a unique look at Magician's Convention in his Storytelling column.  Another good read.

The Hocus in Focus section takes a look at probably 15 books, effects and videos all aimed at making us better magicians. Our reviewers aim to help you make better sense of where to spend your money.

Finally, the true worth for your price of admission has been paid by EL DUCO. His One-Man Parade section has something for everyone and,  as always, Tony Dunn's illustrations make the explanations so easy even a caveman could amaze his favorite Geico salesman. See you next month.
