John CalvertJohn Calvert's magical life captured in new documentary

On Dec. 10, the documentary, "John Calvert: His Magic and Adventures," appeared on DVD, not out of thin air, but through the laborious efforts of the masterful magician's nephew, Fred Calvert, over the past nine years.

Samuel Patrick Smith, executive editor of The Linking Ring, interviewed Fred Calvert about the project and learned how the film producer and director tried for the past two years to finish the project, but he was not satisfied with any of the results. So, he pressed on until he had a product worthy of his uncle's famed life.

Fred Calvert had traveled the country extensively with his Uncle John Calvert and Tammy filming performances and lectures. He used several editors and tried using a narrator, but there was something missing.

In the end, Fred Calvert let his uncle tell his story.

"John Calvert is a wonderful storyteller, coming from a long line of wonderful storytellers," Fred Calvert told Smith in an interview which appears in the December 2009 edition of The Linking Ring. "It turned out that he was able to tell his own life story better than someone scripting it."

Those interested in the DVD can see the trailer on John Calvert's Web site (click here), and The Linking Ring and the International Brotherhood of Magician Web Portal want to extend our appreciation to Fred Calvert and Steven Bakos of Trio Film for producing an exclusive video for the I.B.M.
