John Calvert celebrated his 100th birthday at the annual Abbott’s Magic Get-Together in Colon, Michigan, on August 5. Calvert was the closing act on the evening show, performing his classic “Dancing Handkerchief” routine with his cloth sidekick, Casper.
After Calvert’s introduction, he was greeted by a standing ovation from the audience of one thousand magicians and magic enthusiasts. He made some brief introductory remarks, told a humorous story, and performed his routine. Calvert took his bow to a second standing ovation and was joined on stage by his wife and assistant Tammy Calvert.
After the performance, a fireworks display was given in his honor, followed by a reception at which Calvert autographed copies of his new book, How to Live to Be a Hundred.
The following morning, Saturday, August 6, Calvert—assisted by his wife Tammy—was interviewed on stage by veteran magician Philip Morris who has known Calvert for fifty years.
Calvert’s future plans include performances at the London Palladium in September and The Magic Castle in Los Angeles, California, in October.
