  • SEVEN-YEAR-OLD SET TO DAZZLE CROWD AT MAGICIAN'S CONVENTION
  • Vancouver Sun Daily - June 1, 2007 by Peter Bernie Sun Theatre Critic
  • MAGIC: When it comes to good looking magicians, forget about Criss Angel or David Copperfield. These days, the king of cute is Nicholas Chow. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that he’s only seven years old and can’t keep a smile off his cherubic little face. Already a two- time gold- medal winner in Pacific Coast Association of Magicians competitions (Taking his first prize at the ripe old age of five), Chow has been chosen to perform at this year’s Society of American Magicians convention in Dallas. He’ll be part of the Stars of Tomorrow show at the annual gathering, to be held July 4 to 7, and Chow’s dad Rod laughs when asked if Nicholas will be the youngest performer there. “Absolutely, by far,” says Rod. “The other youth magicians in that show are 16, 17 years old.” Older brother Jack, 10, is also an award- winning magician, joining Nicholas in following in their father’s footsteps. “They grew up into magic, as I’ve been in it for a number of years,” says Rod, who most recently captured his own first place prize at a SAM contest in 2006. “I had them assist me in magic when they were young, started teaching them magic tricks and then created acts for them.” Nicholas mixes music and some dance moves with magic tricks that have him pulling things out of nowhere or changing one thing into another. It’s all done without a word spoken. “Basically, he communicates to the audience with his cuteness and his smile,” says his proud papa. Even when performing in a 1,000- seat showroom aboard the Norwegian Star for a magicians’ convention during a cruise from Vancouver to Los Angeles, Nicholas knew no fear. “Flustered? No, he’s done a lot of performances, so he’s pretty well used to it,” says Rod. “He’s actually quite skillful and well practised.” As brothers, Jack and Nicholas also have a couple of tricks up their sleeves. “They’ve won awards together,” says their dad. “They have a couple of different comedy acts that they do together, funny and cute stuff where they spoof each other, or myself.” Jack is named for his grandfather, who is well- known in Vancouver for taking Chinatown’s historic Sam Kee building on Pender Street and spending $ 250,000 to restore it. Jack Senior is still at work in the 1.8 - metre wide structure, acknowledged as the world’s skinniest commercial building, and Rod did his own following of footsteps into Jack’s insurance business. Should his sons follow suit? “A combination would be good,” says Rod. More important, he adds, is the fact that “magic is a really enjoyable thing for them to do.” You can catch Nicholas Chow before his trip to Texas. On Sunday, June 10 at 1 p. m., he’ll be part of the Vancouver Magic Circle’s annual Magic for Children Show in the studio theatre at the Shadbolt Centre in Burnaby.

  • NICHOLAS CHOW – YOUNGEST VANCOUVER MAGIC CHAMPION
  • At only Age 6 – Nicholas wins 4th Magic Championship
  • Ming Pao Newspaper - February 4, 2007, P. A9
  • Competing against others twice his age, Nicholas Chow, 6, last week, won the Vancouver Magic Circle coveted Percy Poole trophy for Junior Stage Magic. With a spectacular, colourful and amazing Latin themed magic act, Nicholas again stole the hearts of the audience to win his second Vancouver Magic Circle Trophy. Nicholas is by far the youngest to ever win in the 65 year history of the Vancouver Magic Circle.
  • Just last fall, Nicholas won his second Pacific Coast magic trophy. He was the youngest to ever win in the over 70 year history of the Pacific Coast Association of Magicians when he won his first trophy at only age 5. This makes for 4 magic trophies for Nicholas to date which puts him on the tail of his brother Jack, 9, who has already won 8 magic trophies.
  • Father Rod Chow says of his two sons magic accomplishments., “With Jack and Nicholas’ successes at such a young age, we think they already have the best start ever to become the next stars of magic.” The brothers are chips off the block as Rod himself has won over 25 magic trophies culminating to his winning 1st place Internationally at the Society of American Magicians 2006 conference in Louisville, Kentucky. Not wanting to being left out, mom, Sylvia has won trophies for Best Assistant twice.
  • The Magical International Champion Chow family will be performing next on Chinese New Year’s Day, Sunday, February 18, 2007 at International Village, 88 W. • Nicholas Chow, 6, who at only 5 years old last year, was the youngest ever to win in the 73 year history of the Pacific Coast Association of Magicians (PCAM) Magic competitions, again brings back home the Gold Medal in the 2006 competition held this year in Victoria, BC, August 9th to 13, 2006.
  • Not to be outdone, brother Jack Chow, 9, also achieved Gold in the highly sought after Stage Magic category. With this win, Jack successfully defends his title and is now a four time Pacific Coast Champion. The PCAM encompasses magicians from the entire Pacific Rim, as far away as Japan, Hawaii, Southern California and Arizona.
  • Both brothers performed very unique and creatively themed magical acts, demonstrating their skill, innovation and natural entertainment ability to wow the panel of professional judges and magician audience to capture the top awards.
  • It helps to have a dad who is an international magic champion. With over two dozen magic awards under his belt, Rod Chow, was just awarded the coveted 1st Place title in the Society of American Magicians (S.A.M.) International Contest of Close-Up Magic, held in July, 2006 in Louisville, Kentucky, USA. • Chow says: “We are extremely proud of our two sons who at their young ages are already well known and respected in the magic community, and are well on their way to become the next generation of magic superstars. With their wins, this makes for three major magic championships for our family within the last month and an amazing one dozen magic awards within the last year.”
  • The Chow family can be found practicing their magic in their family owned Skinniest Building in the World located in Vancouver Chinatown. Indeed an unusual place for an unusual craft.

  • RICK'S PICKS - CHOW CHAMPIONS
  • Rick Forchuk - CKNW 980 - September 3, 2006 (10:00am - 11:00am)
  • Rick talks about the Champion Chow Magicians on his Sunday syndicated morning program airing weekly across the Corus network from Vancouver to Montreal. Transcript follows:
  • "Now, I’ve always had interest in the art of legerdemain, but like most people I know it’s all a trick until I ran up with what might be the real thing in insurance broker, Rod Chow, who lives in Vancouver, and now it’s all becoming kind of genetic. Now, Chow has worked for years in his family’s Chinatown insurance business, and he’s always practiced magic on the side. A few years back he took a $20. bill from me and he turned it into a $50. bill. And I don’t mean inside a closed fist or behind his back, I mean right in front of my eyes. I was amazed then and I still am as I follow the careers of Las Vegas magicians and view the buzz around the Illusionist movie, and I think more and more about Rod Chow and news recently just cements that. He has two sons, Jack and Nicholas who are ages 9 & 6 respectfully. They both walked away with gold medals in the stage magic category of the Pacific Coast Association of Magicians competition which is held in Victoria, BC earlier this month. Note that it is platform magic, not illusion, and with Nicholas being the youngest person ever to win that award, along with dad, Rod’s international 1st place win in Kentucky earlier this year; well, put it this way, if something’s missing around their house, I think you’d forget about finding it. Now when you watch the movie the Illusionist, same thing, the character there, the main character who starts off doing magic as a child, begins at a very early age and eventually becomes a very very special magician. So congratulations to Rod Chow and his two boys. I think that’s great news, and if you like magic, watch out for these guys right across the country because they’ll show up and they’ll do some interesting things."

  • ROD CHOW - THE MAGICIAN - THE CHAMPION FAMILY
  • Translation of Ming Pao Newspaper Article – August 16, 2006, P. A7
  • The two sons of the very famous magician, Rod Chow, of Vancouver have won the 2006 Championship for the Juniors at the Competition hosted by the Pacific Coast Association of Magicians in Victoria, BC on Aug 13. Nicholas Chow, only 6 & Jack Chow, aged 9 each received the Gold Medal. A family of 3 are all Champion Magicians – What a Legend!
  • Participating candidates came from different countries like Japan, USA and included magicians from Hawaii, Arizona & California. It was a very keen competition.
  • Jack (the Senior) is Rod’s father & has been operating an insurance agency in Chinatown for years. He is very well-known in Chinatown.
  • According to Rod, this is the second time that Nick has won the Championship. Last year he was crowned the Champion when he was only 5. This is the 4th time that the 9-year old Jack got the Gold Medal for Stage Magic. The whole family is thrilled about it.
  • Rod has confidence that his 2 sons might become the world famous Super Magicians one day.
  • In the past one month, Rod & his 2 sons have become the champion magicians at different international competitions. They have accumulated 12 medals altogether in the past 1 year.

  • MAGIC RUNS IN CHOW FAMILY
  • ILLUSIONISTS: Brothers Jack, 8, and Nicholas, 5, learned from their dad
  • The Province Newspaper - December 26, 2005, Vancouver, Canada
  • At a time when most kids just want to play with their new toys, magicians Nicholas and Jack Chow spent yesterday preparing for their performances today at Science World. And while Nicholas is only five years old and Jack is eight, the two already have plenty of credentials to command the limelight and wow the crowds. It helps too, that father Rod Chow is an internationally recognized magician and has plenty of props and illusions for his two young boys to use in their routine.
  • Nicholas is the youngest person ever to take top spot in an annual competition run by the Pacific Coast Association of Magicians. The kindergarten student says he’s had a captive audience since preschool where he was honing his talent each week during show and tell. For a show at Thanksgiving, he pulled a live chicken out of a hat. “They clapped,” Nicholas beamed yesterday, recalling the feat. But like any good magician, he refused to reveal how he dazzled his schoolmates. “I keep the secrets to myself,” he said.
  • For brother Jack, a two time Vancouver Magic Circle and three-time Pacific Coast Junior Champion, there is no easy way to win the spotlight on stage. “You have to have dedication, you have to practise a lot,” he said. “Some tricks are harder than others and you need lots of practice.” Both admitted it’s nervewracking but exciting to be performing difficult tricks before a live audience. The two have assistants: Melody Choi, 4, and Juliana Chow, 6.
  • The kids do have an edge having a dad who can show them the tricks. Like magicians of old, Rod points out that difficult illusions and tricks come with help from someone who is an expert. “That’s how magic has been passed on from generation to generation,” he said. “Magicians teach their apprentices like the way I’m teaching my children.” But rule No. 1, he said, is don’t give out any clues on how the tricks are performed. “As a magician, you keep the secrets to yourself,” said Rod. “I taught them they can’t reveal the secrets — that’s part of the code.”
  • Proud mother Sylvia said having three magicians in the family means they’re always up to something. “All the props are in my living room and people ask if they are the kids toys and I say ‘No, they’re my husband’s toys,’” she said, laughing. And when they’re up on stage, Sylvia keeps thinking how young her two boys are. “What impresses me is they remember the whole show,” she said. “They are up there all alone doing tricks without any prompting.”
