Triple Rotation By Arnold Rabin
Effect: Performer strolls up to two people chatting at a cocktail party (or wherever) and asks if he can display his magical prowess. Magician has victim on the right freely select a card and return it to the deck. The magician then declares that the selected card will now, with a shake of the wrist, mysteriously rise to the top of the deck and turn upside down. Magician then enacts this move only to produce the wrong card. Victim #1 is then asked to hold the wrong card in between his clasped hands. The magician then pleads for a second chance. He declares that all he has to do is shake the deck again and the selected card will drop to the bottom of the deck. This technique also proves disappointing. The second wrong selection is handed to victim #2 to clasp in their hands. The magician, unabashed, pleads for one more chance to redeem himself. He riffles the deck and tells a victim to say stop at anytime and that card will prove to be the selection. The magician glances at the card, smiles, and gives a sigh of relief. He then announces that to fully redeem his reputation he will now perform a miracle. He asks victims 1 and 2 to name the cards they are holding in their hands. He then asks them to place their clasped hands next to his and at the count of three yell “ROTATE”. Miraculously, the magician now reveals that he is holding victim #2’s card; he goes on to show that victim #2 is holding victim #1’s card; and victim#1 is now holding the original selection, which the magician was holding!
Requirements: Ordinary deck of cards and a little “chutzpah”
Setup: None
Method: 1.Get a pinkie break above victim #1’s selection upon its insertion in the deck. 2. As you shake the deck, do a pass bringing the selection to the top. 3. You then execute a double lift revealing the wrong card. 4. Flip them both over back on top of the deck. 5. Place the top card (The real selection) in victim #1’s clasped hands. Ask him to remember both his original selection and the supposed wrong card in his hands. 6. Shake the deck again and show the bottom card to the victims, declaring that this must be the right card. Of course it isn’t. You ask victim#2 to hold out his hands in the same fashion as victim#1. As he does this, turn the deck over (face down) and do a top change. You now place the card victim #1 thinks is in his hand into victim#2’s hand. 7. The third time is the charm so you will now use “real magic”. Ask either victim to say stop as you execute a riffle force of victim #2’s card (it is on top the deck). This becomes the card the magician clasps. Look at this card (you can even misname it if you force it in the beginning) with a knowing smile and a sense of relief. 8. Declare that you will now perform a real miracle to redeem yourself of the previous booboos. Ask the first victim to name the original selection. Ask both victims to name the cards they think they are holding. 9. The magician raises his clasped hands and asks the two victims to do the same. The all then incant the magic word: “ROTATE”. 10. The magician now reveals that he is holding victim #2’s card. Victim #2 is asked to open his hands to discover he is holding victim #1’s card. Victim#1 then opens his hands to reveal he is holding the original selection that the magician was holding.
Notes: This is now my favorite stroll around opener. Because the trick requires the spectator to remember the selections, I repeat the card’s names often. People relish the idea that the magician is “blowing it”. This fact and the twist at the end enhance the entertainment value. This trick was inspired by Jim Swain’s “Icebreaker” that I came across in the July, 1999 issue of “The Linking Ring” magazine.
